Do you have a passion for Billings history, architecture, fundraising, or museums in general?
Volunteers are crucial to the operation of the museum. A small part-time staff and an executive director organize the daily activity at the mansion with the help of dozens of volunteers from the community. Below are some of the ways you can become an important part of the preservation of this historic place.
Become a volunteer!
If you are interested in volunteering please email volunteer@mossmansion.com for more information
Docent and Hosts
Trained in the history of the family and the home, docents and hosts are a vital link between the history of the Moss Mansion and its visitors.
Docents lead one-hour guided tours through the mansion. Docents should be able to easily manage three flights of stairs and should be very comfortable giving presentations and answering questions. They are needed for scheduled daily tours and special group tours.
Hosts welcome guests to the first or second floors for self-guided tours of the museum and are required to use several flights of stairs. Hosts are expected to greet guests and provide descriptions of the rooms and background of the family as well as answers questions in a less structured environment than docents. They will be expected to monitor all guests on a particular floor during their shift.
Visitor Service Volunteers
Visitor Service Volunteers are the first people to greet incoming guest. These volunteers welcome visitors as they arrive, take admission fees, work in the gift shop, operate multiple digital devices, share the history of the artifacts displayed around the entrance while visitors wait for their tour.
Archives and Collections
Archives and Collections volunteers are needed to work in the mansions archive of family and house artifacts. Duties include filing, sorting, cleaning, data entry and various other research and information management tasks.
Events
Event volunteers assist staff with large- and small-scale fundraisers throughout the year. Duties can include ticket sales, drink service, game facilitation, and general customer service during fundraisers.
Garden Volunteers
Garden Volunteers help to maintain the lush gardens and grounds of the Moss Mansion. They work alongside the museum’s groundskeeper and other Master Gardener volunteers to ensure that the grounds are pristine in their appearance. Garden tasks are seasonal and are based on garden needs.
Seasonal Volunteers
Are you a student working on your degree or diploma? Or a part-time resident of Billings? We offer interships and temporay volunteer opportunities in the summer.
Youth Volunteer Program
Our award-winning program provides an opportunity for local students to learn about the inner workings of a museum and how history impacts life today. Middle-school aged students learn how museums engage guests, prepare exhibits, and preserve history to share with everyone. Applications are welcome each April to early June for this summer-time program in partnership with the Western Heritage Center.
